How to Prepare Furniture and Household Goods for Long-Term Storage

Whether you are moving abroad, renovating your home, between rental flats or relocating for work, putting your belongings into storage for a few months is often the simplest option. But long-term storage is different from a quick move — goods sit untouched for weeks or months, so how you prepare them decides the condition they come back in.
1. Sort before you store
Storage is charged by space, so start by deciding what is really worth keeping. Sell, donate or discard items you will not use again. Group the rest into categories — furniture, kitchen, books, clothes, electronics — so packing and retrieval are easier later.
2. Clean and dry everything
Dust, food residue and moisture are the main causes of stains, odour and mould in storage. Wipe down furniture, wash and fully dry clothes and linen, and clean kitchen items before packing. Make sure nothing goes into a box while still damp — in a humid city like Bengaluru during the monsoon, even a little moisture can turn into mildew over a few months.
3. Dismantle large furniture
Beds, wardrobes, dining tables and modular units take up far less space and are less likely to be damaged when dismantled. Put screws, bolts and small fittings in a labelled zip bag and tape it to the main piece, so reassembly is quick.
4. Protect furniture properly
- Wrap wooden furniture in breathable covers or blankets rather than airtight plastic, which can trap moisture against the surface.
- Use corner guards and bubble wrap for glass tops, mirrors and polished edges.
- Keep sofas and mattresses in proper covers, and avoid stacking heavy items on top of them.
5. Prepare appliances
Defrost and dry the refrigerator at least a day in advance, and store it with the door slightly open to prevent odour. Drain washing machines completely and secure the drum if the manual recommends it. Remove batteries from remotes and gadgets, as they can leak over long periods.
6. Pack boxes the right way
- Use strong, good-quality cartons of similar sizes so they stack safely.
- Put heavy items like books in small boxes and lighter items in larger ones.
- Fill empty space with paper so contents do not shift.
- Wrap fragile items individually and mark those boxes clearly as fragile.
7. Label and make an inventory
Label every box on at least two sides with its contents and the room it belongs to. Keep a simple inventory list, with photos of valuable items, so you know exactly what is in storage and can ask for a specific box without searching through everything.
8. Know what not to store
Do not put perishable food, plants, flammable items (such as gas cylinders, fuel, paint thinners or fireworks), or anything illegal into storage. Keep cash, jewellery and important original documents with you or in a bank locker.
9. Choose the right storage facility
Ask the storage provider how goods are stored and handled, how the facility is secured, whether they offer pickup and delivery, how you can access or retrieve items, and whether insurance is available. A professional household storage service will also help with packing and inventory.
